Vanguard Generations: How the Vanguard Has Evolved

The Vanguard has continued to evolve since the first camper left our shop. Rather than waiting for major model-year changes, we make improvements as we identify opportunities through our own testing, installations, and feedback from customers in the field.

To make those changes easier to understand, we’ve broken the Vanguard into generations.

Vanguard Gen 1 — The Original

Gen 1 was the first production version of the Vanguard and established the core design of the camper.

This was the starting point—the version that allowed us to get Vanguards onto trucks, into the field, and begin collecting real-world feedback.

Vanguard Gen 1.1 — Revised Front Latches

With Gen 1.1, we made our first revision to the Vanguard's front latch system.

Changes from Gen 1:

  • Revised front latches

This update improved the front closure system while keeping the overall Vanguard design unchanged.

Vanguard Gen 1.2 — Continued Refinement

Gen 1.2 introduced several additional changes based on our experience building, installing, and using the Vanguard.

Changes from Gen 1.1:

  • Revised front latch design

  • Added a side locking strut

  • Revised interior trap-door geometry, allowing it to open wider

The wider trap-door opening improves access to the camper, while the locking strut provides additional control and support when the Vanguard is open.

Vanguard Gen 1.3 — Interior & Hardware Updates

Gen 1.3 continues the evolution of the Vanguard with updates to the tent area, lift system, and branding.

Changes from Gen 1.2:

  • Interior Velcro added to all models for optional tent insulation

  • Upgraded tent struts

  • New MSJ Off-Road logo

Adding Velcro to the interior makes it easier to install and remove the Vanguard tent insulation system, while the upgraded struts further refine the opening and closing experience.

Continuous Improvement

We don't view the Vanguard as a product that should remain unchanged for years at a time. If we find a way to improve the camper—whether it comes from customer feedback, our installers, manufacturing, or our own time using the product—we want to implement it.

That means you may see smaller revisions like Gen 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 rather than waiting for an entirely new "Gen 2."

The core Vanguard platform remains the same. These generations simply document the improvements we've made along the way.

As the Vanguard continues to evolve, we'll keep this page updated with the latest generation and the changes that come with it.
